Anicent History Lessons

Surname Project

Introduction: Class! You are now embarking on a project that will take you out of Ancient history, and return you to the current day where you will learn and understand the meaning of the last name that you will be writing on documents for the better portion of your life. To better understand the ancient world, we as students must understand how it applies to the people that we are today. With this project, students will get the oppertunity not only to draw and recreate their family crest; but will also dig deeper into the meat that really is their heritage.

Objectives: Sudents will have the following main goals/criteria to complete the assignment:

1. Students will have to re-create their family's coat of arms on heavy paper.

2. Students will also write an identification page that goes along with this drawing of their coat of arms so that one can easily identify what the symbols and colors mean.

3. Students will also be learning their families place of origin, they will do this via numerous websites that will be provided while also at the same time going home and asking their family for any scraps of information they may have about their ancestory.

3. Students will also write an identification page that goes along with this drawing of their coat of arms so that one can easily identify what the symbols and colors mean.

4. Other things that will be required on the bottom of this sheet after the paragraph will be the country of origin, first recorded name usage, and where this family became most previlant when they moved to the United States.

5. If the student finds a website they feel will fit and help them with the criteria for the project, they must come to me for permission to use it.

This means the following MUST be done to get full credit.

- Colored Coat of Arms

- Origination of surname, its meaning, country of origin and earliest date recorded (in paragraph form).

- When the first members of this surname came to be in the United States and where they settled and their occupation if possible.

- All of these should be put in a laminated sheet if possible. (plus 25 points if this is done).
